Project objectives
Demonstration of the innovative wind propulsion technology of the SkySails system for carriers. The automatically navigated towing kite system will be installed and for the first time during the regular operation of a freighter in original size.
Besides the towing kite system a wave monitoring system WaMoS II will be installed on the freighter in order to capture the surrounding seastate as well as movement sensors to capture the movement of the ship. On the one hand the navigation of the ship can be supported with the aid of WaMoS II. On the other hand will be verified if the operation of the towing kite system impacts the movement of the ship.
Objectives are:
- Demonstration of the energy and greenhouse gas savings achievable by the towing kite system
- Practicability, profitability and durability of the technology
- Proof that the towing kite does not exert any negative influences on the ship and its cargo
- Evidence that the kite system works under different meteorological circumstances (e.g. rough water)
- Evaluation of the influence of the kite technology on the ship movements by analysing data of a wave monitoring system and motion sensors aboard the vessel
- Evaluation of the accuracy of weather forecasts and the local wind situation by using a wave monitoring system (WaMoS II)
- Wide-spread dissemination of the project results to launch the technology
